This took place mainly under the influence of Irenaeus, whose writings against the Gnostics set down the fundamental principles of Christian spirituality for the church of the subsequent centuries. Irenaeus faced the first of these two aspects of Gnostic spirituality (contempt for the material world) by referring emphatically to the tradition present in the writings of Ignatius of Antioch: the Eucharist is the "antidote against death" and therefore the source of immortality and eternal life. Irenaeus fought the Gnostics by stressing that the material world is a direct product of the one and only God, the Father, and that matter is good.
