Irenaeus faced the first of these two aspects of Gnostic spirituality (contempt for the material world) by referring emphatically to the tradition present in the writings of Ignatius of Antioch: the Eucharist is the "antidote against death" and therefore the source of immortality and eternal life. Irenaeus fought the Gnostics by stressing that the material world is a direct product of the one and only God, the Father, and that matter is good.
