The bonds are seemingly traded among water molecules (like handing off a baton in a relay race) rather than broken and reformed at a later time. The true nature of a hydrogen bond is still not yet completely understood (Tokmakoff, 2007). , 2004). , 2009). The hydrophobic effect, the inability of some molecules to dissolve in water, is a function of the small size of the molecule and how the solutes interact with the hydrogen bonding. The exact mechanism behind this effect is still not well understood (Granick and Bae, 2008).
Global climate models must take heat of vaporization and heat capacity into account. Another important aspect of water is surface tension. The high surface tension of water results from hydrogen bonding, which pulls water into a tight surface at a gas–water interface. Several organisms, such as water striders, take advantage of this surface tension to walk on the surface of water. Some lizards (Basiliscus and Hydrosaurus) also run across the surface of water using the support of surface tension (Vogel, 1994).
Surface tension determines the size of the largest possible drop of water (Dodds, 2008). Most raindrops are 1 to 2 mm in diameter, but a few as big as 10 mm have been observed. Under microgravity (on the space shuttle) drops as large as 3 cm are stable. Finally, surface tension leads to capillary action, the ability of water to move up narrow tubes. Capillary action is central to forming the capillary fringe (the moist zone in sediments immediately above groundwater) because water creeps up the narrow spaces between sediment particles.
