In this important respect, therefore, Marx's theory must be developed in order to take into account the changed conditions of modem capitalism. The. second broad feature of capitalist development which we have identified as necessitating further elaboration of Marx's original theory is the development of national and multinational corporations, together with associated features 50 ECONOMY AND CLASS STRUCTURE such as the separation of de jure ownership from de facto control (the supposed 'managerial revolution'), and increasing domination and manipulation of the market by such corporations.

However, as we wish to argue that Marxist class analysis in fact gives a better understanding of the class structure of capitalist societies than neoWeberian theories of the kind developed by Giddens, we shall now point out some of the problems raised by the application of neo-Weberian 'market-models'. In the previous chapter we raised two general problems of neo-Weberian theory- the approach to class conflict and the analysis of Eastern bloc societies. Before we consider Giddens's approach to these topics we must first sketch out his model of class analysis.

That is, it is perfectly possible for groupings (particularly amongst the 'middle strata') to use both exclusion and solidaristic strategies in maximising their claims to resources. White-collar workers might at the same time use 'exclusion devices of a credentialist kind'- insistence on particular qualifications as a condition for occuaptional m~mb_ership - as well as the solidaristic strategy of trade umontsm.
