Stereotypes I have heard Americans claim they have trouble telling one black person from another. To them they are all just “blacks” or “Negroes,” and when a newspaper reports a crime committed by someone identified as “black,” the stereotype is reinforced and, of course, the prejudice. But, as I was one evening to discover, Africans have their own stereotypes of “Europeans,” as all whites, regardless of their origins, are called. It was after supper, and we teachers were returning to Bamako after an afternoon of language lessons when our American driver committed some kind of minor infraction and was stopped by police.
