The development of contaminant plumes below industrial solid waste dump sites seriously harms the environment and may endanger domestic or agricultural water supplies. Waste in the form of industrial by-products, process water, cleaning water, and wastewater effluent may infiltrate from the land surface or open streams and leak from basins.

5 Uncontrolled land development and irrigation practices Two examples of water mismanagement, which are not directly related to wells include improper land development in areas with pyrite-rich soils and poorly managed irrigation schemes in semiarid or arid regions. Pyrite in coastal soils may oxidise as a result of water level changes, resulting in sulfate-rich and acid groundwater. Development of such areas often includes the installation of drainage systems. In case these systems are not properly managed, groundwater levels may be substantially lowered.
