The various languages may be divided into 12 linguistic groups. The most important of these are: (1) the Sara-Baguirmi group, spoken by nearly 2 million people in southern Chad, (2) the Chado-Hamitic, a Chadic group that is related to the Hausa language; (3) the Moundang-Toubouri group, spoken by over half a million people in southwestern Chad; (4) the Kanembu-Zaghawa (Nilo-Saharan) group, spoken in central and northern Chad, mostly by nomadic clans; and (5) the Maba linguistic group, spoken in eastern Chad in Biltine and Ouadai.
