This whole process of Christian growth and redemption is a baffling one for Julian as her own words make clear This secounde shewyng was so lowe and so little and so symple that my spirytes were in great traveyle in the beholdyng, mornyng, dredfull and longyng: for I was some tyme in a feer wheder it was a shewying or none. However, her persevering fidelity, eventually facilitates the gift of peace. All that matters is "his will"; whether he is "seen" or "sought" hardly matters for the pilgrim: For God's will is that by faith we should see him continually, though it seems to us that we are seeing him so little.

But such tempests are invitations to look within to those "waters of a river" which give joy to the place where the Most High dwells. In some sense that must be the heart of the believer who is in this God who is Maker, Keeper and Lover. That truth is more fundamental and enduring than the passing storms. Such a prayer of a simple awareness of the Trinity within us and enveloping and embracing us is a fulfilling of the final command of this psalm: 31 Be still and know that I am God. We all need to stop and wonder, to ponder the reality of Maker, Keeper and Lover; to know Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

But Scripture gives us another side of the coin to ponder. There is always a wisdom at work. Though she is but one, she can do all things, and while remaining in herself she renews all things; in every generation she passes into holy souls and makes them friends of God, and prophets (Ws7:27) There is some sense in which it can be said of everything that God did it; "there is no doer but he". Everything is either ordained directly by God in some way, or permitted by him. Nothing happens that is outside the scope of God's permissive will.
