The lands of the four types of Desire Realm gods from Without Combat on up do not have day and night as we know them, but flowers open and close. There is the sound ofbirds. There are no sun and moon; the gods see each other by the light of their own bodies. From the Land of the Thirty-three on down, there are night and day, sun and moon. The three realms and the nine levels constitute cyclic existence; these are the states in which we wander. As was explained earlier, we are born in these states through actions (karma, las).

THE FORM REALM Above the six types of beings in the Desire Realm are the seventeen divisions within the Form Realm. The beings of the Form Realm are gods, but not gods of the Desire Realm. The Form Realm is so called because the gods of the Form Realm are free of the type of desire that beings have in the Desire Realm, but they still have desire for, or attachment to, visible form - that is, colour and shape - as well as sounds and objects of touch. However, there are no odours or tastes in the Form Realm.

It is very difficult to alternate concentrations in this way. Therefore, a person who can do only these three has to leave the meditation after three moments. This cultivation serves as a cause of rebirth in Not Great. A series of six alternating concentrations causes a person to be reborn in Without Pain. Cultivation of alternating concentrations for nine moments causes rebirth in Auspicious Appearance; cultivation for twelve moments causes rebirth in Great Perception, and cultivation for fifteen moments causes rebirth in Not Low.
