Although consciousness and the unconscious are diametrically opposed, they are, according to Jung, able to complement one another. Because the psyche is a self-regulating system, and, as such, cannot function without opposition (Jung, 1917/1926/1943, par. 92), it follows that the attitudes of consciousness and unconsciousness compensate one another to achieve psychic balance. Since energy is generated only through the tension of opposites, psychological growth necessitates the discovery of the opposite attitude to that of the conscious mind: The repressed content must be made conscious so as to produce a tension of opposites, without which no forward movement is possible.
