Three years passed, however, before any groundwater samples were taken. Contamination of groundwater with pesticides was first detected on Long Island in August 1979, when samples taken from shallow wells located at the Long Island Horticultural Research Laboratory at Riverhead (a branch of Cornell University) indicated that aldicarb was percolating through the unsaturated zone to groundwater.
