What is tragic in the intertwined histories and misfortunes of Godley, Khan, and Winnicott is that psychoanalysis has been the occasion of a sinister farce, of fateful repetitions, where compulsions belonging to one individual’s history are transferred on to another in the wrong way, from analyst to patient when it should be the reverse—thereby alienating the individual from his own unconscious, without any real analysis. Aside from all the mismanagements within the case, one thing strikes me in particular: it seems as if Godley’s traumatic background induced a narcissistic structure that Khan, despite his acuteness, did not know how to handle.
