Named Entity Recognition. When citing persons or organizations a pronoun, a noun phrase or the proper name of an entity can be used to reference the quotation speaker. State-of-the-art named entity recognizers mainly detect top-level entities like persons, organizations, and locations which may be a starting point for the detection of quotation holders. We integrated the Stanford named entity recognizer into our quotation extraction pipeline. The Stanford recognizer is implemented as a Conditional Random Field classifier [16].
In contrast to concrete entities, abstract topics are nonlocal information that have to be mined from the context. In our scenario, which is sentiment analysis based on newspaper quotations, the structure of quotations already provides an opinion holder. Knowing who uttered a quotation, we consider the quotation holder being also the opinion holder. Our Contribution. We present work that aims at determining opinion orientation in German news articles. In contrast to many other sentiment analysis systems we focus our approach on direct and reported speech identified previously in the news articles.
