Social foundations classes are places where the kinds of issues and questions above can be addressed. The standards movement can help make the social foundations component of teacher preparation and development relevant and meaningful by compelling a sharper focus on understanding and process, justification and interpretation, and critical reflection. Some argue that such skills can be and have been integrated throughout teacher preparation programs without distinct social foundations courses. We argue that dedicated study in the foundations elevates the knowledge of the teacher to a distinctive professional level that is appropriate for teachers who have to make decisions in complex cultural contexts.

This critical, cross-disciplinary view of social foundations of education, not the "introduction to teaching" approach, marked the development of the field from the 1940s onward, and it led to the founding of the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) in the 1960s and the Council of Learned Societies in Education (CLSE) in the 1970s. ; Personal correspondence to Steve Tozer, January 10, 1984.
