Within eighteen months, Stanley would be famous and Livingstone would be dead, succumbing at last to malaria and dysentery. The source of the Nile remained the Holy Grail of Africa exploration, a quest that would draw Stanley back to the east coast of Africa in 1874. He would remember Mukamba’s words.
The determination he exhibited while traversing Africa gave Stanley a way of compensating for his insecurities in the salons of Europe. Self-discipline was a theme that weaves through all of his expeditionary writings. Rather than education or social pedigree, he believed that willpower was the engine that drove geographical discovery. It was the key to unlocking Africa and opening it to the West. Yet even willpower had its limits. Twenty miles from the snow-capped mountains, he could go no farther.
The years ahead would be filled with projects—lectures and interviews, books and articles, plans for future expeditions—that grew out of the 1874–77 trans-African expedition.
