A century after English religious and political schisms had moved Prideaux to write his True Nature of Imposture, political and religious schisms prompted two American editions of his book. These two separate publications show the immediate political use a biography of Muhammad, even a century-old one, could have in America. Stewart & Cochran of Philadelphia, publishers of religious books, issued the first American edition of Prideaux's True Nature of Imposture in 1796. Stewart & Cochran included Prideaux's original introduction, with its attack on the "great prevailing of infidelity in the present age" and its plea to every Christian minister to fight deism, apostasy, and their horrible consequences.

To discourage the Algerians from capturing any more Americans, Jefferson feigned indifference to the captives' fate. If the United States offered large ransoms, Jefferson reasoned, or seemed overanxious to redeem the hostages, the Algerians would go out and capture more Americans. What seemed cruel to the men in captivity, Jefferson explained, was a kindness to those still free. It was for the ultimate good of the captives, and the United States, to bring down the price. 37 Making the Algerians think the United States would not redeem its citizens was more than, or less than, a stratagem to prevent future captures.

Prideaux noted that Muhammad's "imposture" began at about the same time that Gregory I had become Pope and claimed supremacy over the entire Christian church. Muhammad and Gregory I, "having conspired to found themselves an empire in imposture," urged their followers to use fire and sword to achieve it. Prideaux, an Anglican minister, saw Islam and Catholicism as the two feet of the Antichrist, set on Christendom in the East and West. Both Catholicism and Islam permitted religious and political tyranny, but more important than their inherent evil was that both were allowed to grow because good men were indifferent to their consequences.
