All aspects of child care were to be left to the mothers. We had told the mothers from the start that they, not the participant observers, were in charge of the children; the observers were not defined as nursery teachers. However, in spite of this, the mothers had questions in their minds regarding what was expected of them. The problem was enhanced by the fact that the mothers' room was originally separated from the playroom by a ceiling-high partition, with only a rather large doorway between.

In the pilot study we took a group of toddlers aged 9 to 20 months. As the study progressed, we came to believe more and more strongly that by the last quarter of the first and during the second year these children were, from the point of view of separation-individuation, in an advanced stage of that process, already far removed from the hypothesized prior phase of development, namely, the normal symbiotic 33 SEPARATION-INDIVIDUATION IN PERSPECTIVE phase (Mahler and Furer, 1963b). This meant that we could not directly observe the beginnings of the separation-individuation process as the infant evolved from this previous symbiotic phase.

We observed the holding behavior of mothers with their infants and the molding behavior of infants with their mothers. We observed infants alternately melting into, versus stiffening and stemming against, the mother's body. These and other observations gave us insights into the lap baby's earliest boundary formation within symbiosis much before the baby's earliest approach and distancing behaviors in space would occur. Then we were most carefully observing the earliest signs of differentiation (see Part II, Chapter 4).
