Shortly after his first major illness in 1826, Comte understood his own mental crisis and the crisis of modern society as analogous: both were the result of intellectual, moral, and physical forces collapsing into a disordered excess of energy (Pickering 1993: 411). In the early months of 1826, for example, Comte did much to develop his positive theory (and thus his theory of modernity, and the establishment of sociology) after ‘a continuous meditation of eighty hours’. However, this theoretical development took place alongside stomach problems, his wife leaving him, accusations that his wife was a prostitute, demands for money, and, eventually, total mental and physical collapse (Gane 1995: 140–1).

We are not implying that sociologists share a view of the causal relationship between action, media and outcome. Some suggest that the collectivity has causal priority, while others suggest that individual social action is most important. Furthermore, we are not implying that these theories agree about the content or outcomes of what is elementary to social and moral life, or conceptualise ‘the social’ and ‘the moral’ in the same way. Rather, their differences and disagreements define the type of theory they represent.

For a different view of Elias’s relationship with sociology, see Kilminster (1998). 2 HUMAN SOCIOLOGY 1. Introduction This chapter returns to the founder of sociology, Auguste Comte, and examines how the early development of the discipline took place in a context marked by a series of controversies concerning ‘human nature’ and the proper roles of reason, emotion, and religion in the governance of society. Students of sociology are taught that Comte sought to construct a rigorously ‘positive’ approach towards the acquisition of knowledge.
