Showing how mothers' actions guided their children's attachment was valuable in itself, but it also demonstrated the importance of the internal working model of social relationships. Repeated acts by the mothers triggered responses in the babies, but these involved more than the primitive, instinctual level of action suggested by the ethologists. These repeated events let babies learn what they might expect from other human beings.
Observations by Anna Freud and Dorothy Burlingham showed how the younger children coped with this abrupt, terrifying, often permanent separation from familiar caregivers. One group of small children was described as turning to each other for help and comfort, rather than accepting nurturing from strange adults. 10 "Attachment theory" and "Bowlby's attachment theory" are almost synonymous terms today, although, as we will see in Chapter 8, another form of attachment theory, not identical with Bowlby's work, is beginning to emerge.
