Nor is there any reason why the topics emerging should only be—as these were—ethical ones, or ones on the borders of ethics and politics. All kinds of big philosophical issues can and do emerge, just as Medawar pointed out that big scientific issues can emerge from scientific work undertaken for practical reasons. This fertility has, however, been largely concealed from recent generations of philosophy students either by ignoring current affairs altogether, or by treating them in a way that carefully plays down that relevance.
But how does it relate to our speculative thinking, if we try to do that too? This raises the awkward question: inside the philosopher, who is it that does the philosophizing? I am sorry if this seems a confusing query. Life would certainly be simpler if we were so made that such questions couldn’t arise. But politics, like everyday life, is full of choices to be made; and whenever we try to make a choice, a whole committee of little voices starts inside us, each urging us to a different decision.
33 One reason why people object to specificity may perhaps be the fact that there has long existed a certain amount of rather bad moral philosophy, written about certain specific public topics, notably euthanasia and abortion. The trouble with this work was not that it was too specific, but that it was bad.
