In 1794, Karl Friedrich Stäudlin published a groundbreaking two-volume work on the history and spirit of skepticism. His opening words were: Skepticism is beginning to become a sickness of the age, and—which is a rare phenomenon in history—is beginning to spread itself among more classes and to express its effects on a large scale. ²⁰ How could Kant’s revolution have so paradoxical an effect? This is not only an historical question. For even today many of us continue to grapple with problems that may justifiably be called Kantian or post-Kantian.
He simply excludes from consideration any account of our practices of judgment developed within empirical psychology. In contrast, Maimon finds empirical psychology to be a discipline worthy of development. If the explanations promised by the discipline entail skepticism about certain practices of judgment, then the proper response is to change those practices insofar as that is possible, not to throw out the explanations because their implications are unsettling. Maimon’s second reason for doubting that we actually have experience may be seen as a response to the following Kantian objection to what has just been said.
Appearances are not things in that one can feel compelled to read as espousing a Cartesian conception of the mind, hence as espousing pre-Kantian empirical idealism. But he seems to have no reservations about attributing the pre-Kantian, Cartesian conception not only to Jacobi, who explicitly rejects it, but also to German idealists whose apparently pre-Kantian formulations may also be reinterpreted in the way Collins reinterprets Kant himself, and who may thus be seen as the post-Kantians they explicitly profess to be.
