Acquiring existing journals and starting new ones Most commercial and university press journal publishers, as well as some learned society publishers, continue to seek out additional journals to publish. Major journal publishers receive numbers of unsolicited proposals each year and seek out other ideas in discussion with outside advisers and contacts. Secondly, the publisher may develop proposals for new journals in-house, probably with the assistance of outside advisers.
Editors and sponsors should always know who within the publisher they are dealing with; sudden, unannounced staff changes are unsettling. It is helpful if they can meet not only the person in charge of that journal but others dealing with it. Regular reports on sales, promotion, income from advertising (if appropriate), production and production delays are appreciated and suggest that the publisher cares about the journal. Meetings should be minuted and points raised followed up promptly. Editors commonly complain that they thought it was agreed that the Editing | 35 publisher would take some action but nothing happened.
The editor needs to be both enthusiastic and clear-headed about the journal, and to recognise that it will take much time and effort to get a new one established or to make much impression on the content of an existing one. They must be liked and respected by their peers. While editors are better paid than they once were (those of some learned society journals were often honorary, being paid no more than their expenses) few journals can afford generous editorial payments.
