The growth of neural networks in the cortex and their connection to learning and education is the topic of the chapter by Kurt W. Fischer, founder and director of the Mind, Brain, and Education program at the Graduate School of Education of Harvard University. He leads the first academic training program that systematically and broadly connects biology, cognitive science, and education. With Antonio M. Battro, Juliana Pare´-Blagoev, and other colleagues he launched the International Mind, brain, and education 13 Mind, Brain and Education Society, IMBES, at the working session of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and is the President of IMBES.

Le´na Of course, attention is fundamental to learning in school, since students must maintain attention during a task; but the ability to concentrate varies greatly among individuals and tasks. One question is how much of attention is inherited, which was addressed through a specific test of attention in a study of monozygotic and dizygotic twins. The data supported a role for genes in the executive attention network. In other experiments the alleles of two genes related to dopamine produced different activation within the anterior cingulate.
