At the same time, through his own self-analysis, he was discovering troubling thoughts about his own father. Sharpe and Rosenblatt (1994) illustrate this with the example of a man, Jake, who came from a family of six boys. One reason for his anguish was that he had competed with his older brother Frank not only for his father's attention, but also for that of a younger brother, Tommy, to whom Frank was very close.
