But I want to suggest that, before we can fully account for the more general marginalization of siblings in Freud's thinking, we have to look at the way in which he marginalized the "prehistoric old woman", his nurse. In the early years of Freud's exploration of the unconscious, he was troubled by the accounts of his patient's tales of seduction. At the same time, through his own self-analysis, he was discovering troubling thoughts about his own father. O n 8th February 1897 he wrote to Fliess, "Unfortunately, my own father was one of these perverts and is responsible for the hysteria of my brother .

Sharpe and Rosenblatt (1994) illustrate this with the example of a man, Jake, who came from a family of six boys. Jake had become the most successful of the brothers but "he felt anguished and hollow about this victory" (p. 503). One reason for his anguish was that he had competed with his older brother Frank not only for his father's attention, but also for that of a younger brother, Tommy, to whom Frank was very close. This "sibling triangle" eventually resulted in Jake, Frank, and Tommy all engaging simultaneously in homo sexual activity, with Jake vying with Tommy for Frank's attention.

Brothers and sisters tend to be of the same generation, and if they have been each other's "first choice of object" we can safely assume that they will not have the same conscious or unconscious concerns as parents. Why do we need to dismiss this difference? What would be lost? The reason for Freud's belief that the earliest attachments can be replaced by parental attachments is, as I have already suggested, to do with the importance he placed upon his emerging theory of the Oedipus complex. If the wish to marry your mother and kill your FREUD AND SIBLINGS 31 father are the essential unconscious wishes of the psyche, and from these wishes the structure of the psyche is determined, then it follows that an attachment to a sibling must be no more than a parental substitute.
